The film follows Rapunzel, whose magical hair is born into her after her ailing mother is given a flower sprouted from pure sunlight to heal her. Mother Gothel, who discovered the babe possessed the same magical properties as the flower once had, kidnaps and locks her away in an isolated tower for eighteen years to exploit her powers. Every year, on Rapunzelâs birthday, the king and queen release thousands of sky lanterns in hopes it will reunite them with their daughter. Rapunzel, dreaming of seeing them up close, uses the sudden appearance of Flynn Rider to escape her imprisonment.
